Become a Referee

How to Register

Becoming an Indiana Soccer referee takes three steps: complete the online course, attend an in-person on-field session, then get your badge and start earning game assignments. Follow the steps below to avoid delays.

Register at the Learning Center (opens in a new tab)

Step 1 · Online

Select a Course & Complete Online Assignments

This must be completed before you can attend an on-field session. Log in to U.S. Soccer's Learning Center using the button below. If you've ever been a licensed referee or coach you already have a profile — log into that account (use "forgot password" if needed). If you've never had a profile, choose "Create new account."

Once your account is created you'll be redirected to Indiana's First Time Referee Course. If you land somewhere else, just click the button again.

Go to the Learning Center (opens in a new tab)

You'll complete eight assignments (ten if you are an adult):

  • Introduction to Safe and Healthy Playing Environments
  • First Time Referee — Introduction
  • First Time Referee — Preparing for the Game
  • First Time Referee — During the Game
  • First Time Referee — After the Game
  • First Time Referee — Laws of the Game
  • 2026 Laws of the Game Update
  • 2026 First Time Referee Quiz (English and Spanish)
Adults (18+) also complete: Background Screening & SafeSport Training
U.S. Soccer recommends Google Chrome for best performance. If you won't finish a module in one sitting, save your progress and close the browser — leaving a module open for a long time may prevent it from saving.

Your progress saves automatically after each assignment, so you don't have to finish in one sitting. Resume any time via Courses > My Courses > Go to Classroom > Assignments. Completing all assignments is required before you can attend an on-field session.

Step 2 · In Person

Attend & Complete the On-Field Session

All online content must be completed before you'll be allowed to attend and participate. The on-field session takes place on a field and involves a moderate amount of running, so wear footwear with good traction and dress for the weather. Sessions last about four hours, and most facilities won't have drinking water available — please bring your own.

Late arrivals or early departures can't exceed 20 minutes total and must be pre-approved by the instructor. If you're late, leave early, or can't physically participate, credit can't be earned — work with your DRA or course instructor to transfer to another course.

Next Steps

Once you've finished both the online work and the on-field session, you've completed the Referee Course. Here's what comes next.

Get Your Referee Badge

Within about two weeks of completing the course, your 2026 U.S. Soccer Referee Badge is mailed to the address in your Learning Center profile. You can begin refereeing right away.

Most of Indiana uses the GotSport assignment system. Choose the link that fits you:

Find licensed assignors in your area and reach out — they'll assign you games. If you have trouble reaching one, contact your DRA for help.

Free Mentoring

ISRA will work with your assignor to schedule free mentoring on your first game or two when available. Just tell us when and where you've been assigned.
