As part of the Regional Referee certification process, officials complete the U.S. Soccer fitness test. Male officials are evaluated against the Women’s Category 1 standard, while female officials are evaluated against the Women’s Category 3 standard. The test has two parts: a sprint test and an interval endurance run.
Part 1 – Sprint Test
- Six 40-meter sprints, each timed individually
- Walk back to the start line between each sprint
- Dynamic start: front foot on a line 1.5 m behind the timing gate
- A slip or fall earns one repeat attempt for that sprint
- Missing the time on one sprint allows a single makeup attempt after sprint six
- Missing the time on two sprints ends this part of the test
Part 2 – Interval Endurance Run
- 40 continuous intervals
- Each interval: 75 m run plus 25 m recovery walk
- Walk zone marked by cones 3 m to either side of each 75 m mark
- Arriving late to the walk zone once earns a warning
- A second late arrival ends the test
- Plan on roughly a 10-minute rest between the sprint test and the interval run
